New downtown Boise YMCA will open Dec. 12 as old State Street site closes

Boise's new downtown YMCA now has an opening date. The Idaho Statesman reports the new CapEd Downtown Boise YMCA will open on Dec. 12, 2026, with the longtime State Street building closing a few days earlier on Dec. 6 to make the move possible.

This is a big transition for downtown and the North End edge, not just because of the size of the project but because the old site still doesn't have a decided next chapter. The YMCA says it's talking with stakeholders about the highest and best use of that property, so we have a clear move date for the new building, but not a final answer yet for what replaces the old one.

Opening timeline and size

According to the YMCA, the new campus is at 421 N. 10th St. A ribbon-cutting is planned for 10 a.m. on opening day, followed by tours for members and guests.

The timeline looks like this:

  • Dec. 6, 2026: old downtown YMCA closes
  • Dec. 12, 2026: new CapEd Downtown Boise YMCA opens
  • Late 2027: expected opening for the Kissler Family Early Childhood Education Center

The new building is 109,000 square feet, which the YMCA says is about 26% larger than the current Downtown Boise Y.

The YMCA also says the new facility is expected to serve about 16,000 members and 100,000 visits per month, up from about 11,500 members and 55,000 visits now.

What happens to the old State Street site

The current YMCA building sits on the north side of State Street between 10th and 11th streets. It was built in 1969.

The YMCA plans to demolish that building in the near future. What comes after that is still being discussed. The nonprofit's spokesperson, Meagan Ellis, said the YMCA is talking with community stakeholders about the highest and best use of the old property.

There is also an ownership piece here worth noting. CCDC says that after a 2024 land exchange, the YMCA acquired 421 N. 10th St. for the new facility while CCDC took ownership of 1111 W. State St. CCDC says it is responsible for managing that State Street property, including safety, security, and code compliance.

So while people may assume a full redevelopment plan is already set, the notes available now say the future use is still undecided.

The broader block redevelopment

The new Y is part of a larger redevelopment effort on the block. The YMCA says the site sits next to Boise High School and near the Idaho State Capitol, at the edge of downtown and the North End.

The project also ties into the forthcoming ParkBoi garage. In addition, the Kissler Family Early Childhood Education Center is planned in ground-floor space in the adjacent garage project.

The YMCA says the new Y and the Kissler center together will cost about $82 million. It has raised more than $42 million so far, with the rest expected to come from partnerships, government funding, property sales, and debt.

My take

For people who live nearby, this is one of those changes you'll actually feel pretty quickly. The December move date is firm enough that you can start thinking in real-world terms about traffic patterns, foot traffic, and how the block functions once the new building is operating.

For buyers, I think the main point is simpler than the headlines: don't assume the old State Street site has a settled future just because the new YMCA opening is scheduled. If you're buying near downtown or the North End edge, it's worth following both pieces separately:

  • the new Y opening this December
  • demolition of the old building
  • whatever public process or stakeholder discussions shape the reuse of the State Street property

Community anchors like this matter because they change how people use an area day to day. But from a real estate standpoint, the timing of the move and the still-open question of the old site's next use are two different things, and both are worth watching.
